String 24 beads onto the long tail end of yarn. You will slide these beads
to the needle as you cast on.
NOTE: If you are knitting the beads on,
you will also need to string 54 beads for cabled heel (48 beads for plain heel
) onto yarn for the beaded leg. These beads should be on ball end of
yarn.
(how to string beads onto yarn: use either a bead threader or a thin sewing
needle which can fit through bead hole. Tie a short length of thread to the
end of yarn and thread other end through threader or sewing needle. )
CUFF: On 2.25mm needles, using the German Twisted Cast-on, cast-on 1
sts, slide bead from long tail end of yarn snuggly up to needle, cast-on 3
sts, slide bead, repeat until all 24 beads have been used, then cast-on 2 more
stitches. (72 sts). Divide stitches onto 4 dps, one or two circulars as per
your own preference. Join, being careful not the twist your stitches. Place
marker to indicate beginning of round.
Beging Zig-Zag rib starting at Row 4, and work Zig-Zag rib for 13
rounds. If you prefer a longer leg, work more rounds of ribbing ending on
row 4.
LEG: Using 2.5 mm needles, work rows 1-12 of cable pattern for 4
repeats. Work rows 1-3 one more time then begin set-up for heel flap.
SET-UP ROW FOR CABLED HEEL FLAP: k7, k2tog, k1, pm (beginning of the
heel flap), ssk, [k3, p1, yo, sl 1 (see special instructions above), p1]

p1] twice, k3, k2tog, pm (end of heel flap), k1, k2tog, k14, ssk, k6. Now, k9
to first marker. You will need to realign the stitches on your needles (35 sts
heel/32 sts instep).
SET-UP ROW FOR PLAIN HEEL FLAP: Knit around, decreasing 8 sts evenly
(64 sts). Rearange sts so that cables are centered on front of leg and work
your favorite heel. (32 sts heel/32 sts instep)
HEEL: will be worked over 35 sts. Place remaining 32 sts on a holder
for instep. Heel flap is worked back and forth. Heel flap should measure 2 ½
inches when completed.

GUSSET: Evenly pick up and knit 20 sts along side of heel. Place
marker for gusset. Knit 32 instep sts. Place marker for gusset. Pick up and
knit same number of stitches along remaining side of heel. Knit 10 stitches
and place marker. The beginning of the round is now the middle of the heel

Decrease round: knit to last 3 stitches before first
marker, k2tog, k1. Slip marker, k1, ssk, knit across to last 3 stitches before
second marker k2tog, k1. Slip marker, k1, ssk, knit to end. Now
(work one
round even, work decrease round) until 32 stitches remain. Then work decrease
round only until 20 stitches remain. Use Kitchener stitch to close toes.
Hints for attaching beads:
1. Using a crochet hook: You will need
a small hook that will fit through bead hole: When you reach the stitch for
BEAD, slide bead onto shaft of crochet hook. With yarn held in back, slip st
off needle and catch with crochet hook. Slide bead onto stitch, then slip
stitch onto right needle. The bead is now attached.
2. To knit pre-strung
bead (p1, BEAD, p1): pl, then wyif, slide a bead snuggly up to right needle,
slip next stitch as if to purl, p1. The bead is now attached.
