IRRESISTIBLE BOLERO

bolero jacket to knitMaterials: 1 ball Opal 6ply, pair of 3.25 and 4mm needles. A button.

Measurements: Length 23cm, width 52cm. Fit approx 2years.

BACK: Using 4mm needles cast on 63 stitches. Work straight in st st for 23 cm. Cast off 20 stitches. Knit 23, cast off 20 sts. Leave the 23 sts on a stitch holder.

LOWER BACK EDGING: With rs facing and using 3.25mm needles pick up and knit 47 sts evenly along cast on edge of back.
Knit 3 rows.
Next row: Cast off 1 st knit ways, *slip stitch on right hand needle back onto left hand needle, cast on 2 sts, cast off 4 sts knit ways, rep from * to end. Fasten off.

LEFT FRONT: Using 4mm needles cast on 23 sts. Working in st stitch as follows:
Next row: Knit
Next row: Inc in 1st st, purl to end.
Next row: Knit to last 2 sts, inc in next st, k1.
Next row: Inc in 1st st, purl to end. 26 sts. Rep last 2 rows 3 times more 30 sts.
Work in st stitch until work measures 9 cm.
Dec 1 st at neck edge in next and every alt row until 26 sts. Then each 4th row until 20 sts. Length should be 23 cm. If not knit the extra row/s. Cast off.

RIGHT FRONT: Mirror the left side.

Sew shoulder seams tog.

R side facing measure 13 cm on bodice side. Pick up 47 sts finishing at the same measurement on back. Working in st st and decrease 1 st at each end of every 6th row 37 st until work measures 11 cm. R s facing *k4, k2tog (repeat from * to end. Change to 3.25 needles and knit three rows then begin the edging. Cast off 1 stitch and slip *stitch on right hand needle back onto left hand needle, cast on 2 sts, cast off 4 sts, rep from * to end.
COLLAR & FRONT EDGING:
R side facing and 3.25mm needles pick up 19 sts evenly along right front cast on edge. 7 sts evenly along shaped edge, 12 sts evenly along straight edge. 26 sts along shaped neck edge. 23 sts from stitch holder back neck. Pick up 26 evenly along shaped neck edge, 12 sts evenly along straight edge, 7 evenly along shaped edge, 19 evenly along left front cast on edge. 151 sts.

Next row k38 *k1, p1, rep from * to last 39 sts. Knit 39 sts. Next row: k 33 cast off 2 sts k 3 (5). Rib 52, slip next st onto right hand needle and take yarn to the opposite side of work between needles, slip same st back onto left hand needle (this will now be referred to as turn.
2nd row: Rib 25 turn
3rd row: Rib 29 turn
4th row: Rib 33 turn
Continue in this manner adding 4 more stitches at every turn until you reach the beginning of the neck slope again. (Where the ribbing stops). Turn and knit to the same place on the other side and turn. Next row knit to end. Then knit until the buttonhole and cast on two sts and knit to end.
Edging: Cast off 1 st * slip stitch on right hand needle back onto left hand needle, cast on 2 sts, cast off 4 sts, rep from * to end.
Sew up sleeve and side seams, put on a button and smile at your creation.

Again, I have chosen not to match the fronts and love the way the pattern emerges. However, I also know that some knitters just cannot bring themselves to do this.
