Child's bolero jacket
Materials:
100g ball Opal Prisma 4ply, 50g contrast mohair for band, pair 2.75mm knitting needles.
Measurements:
Length from top of shoulder 28cm, width all around underarm 56cm, length of sleeve from under-arm 5.5cm.
Right front:
Using 2.75mm needles, cast on 16 stitches.
1st row - increase once in first st, knit plain to end of row.
2nd row - purl to last st, increase once in last stitch. Repeat 1st and 2nd rows six times (30 sts).
Work 33 rows in plain stocking stitch without shaping. Cast off 6 sts at beginning of next row.
Work 16 rows in plain stocking stitch without shaping.
In next row *k2, k2 tog., repeat for * to end of row. (18 sts). Following row, K1, purl to last st.,K1.
Proceed as follows:
1st row. K2, *P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row. Repeat this row seventeen times.
Shape for shoulder as follows:
1st row - work in rib to last 13 sts, turn
2nd row - work in rib to end of row. Cast off.
Left front:
Work to correspond with right front, working shapings at opposite ends of needle.
Back:
Using 2.75mm needles, cast on 80 stitches.
1st row - knit plain
2nd row - purl. Repeat these 2 rows 22 times. Cast off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Work 18 rows in stocking stitch without shaping. Then proceed as follows -
1st row - k2, *p1, k1, repeat from * to end of row. Repeat this row 9 times.
Next row 1 - k2, (p1, k1) six times, p1, k38, (k1, p1) seven times, k1.
Repeat 1st row seven times. Shape shoulder as follows:
1st & 2nd rows - work to last 13 sts, turn
3rd & 4th rows - work to last 26 sts, turn
5th row - work to end of row. Cast off.
The sleeves:
Using 2.75 mm needles and contrast mohair. Cast on 46 stitches.
1st row - k2, *p1, k1, repeat from * to end of row. Repeat this row seven times. Change back to Opal wool. Next row increase once in first st., *increase once in next st., repeat from * to end of row (92sts)
Next row, purl. Proceed as follows -
1st row - knit
2nd row - purl
Repeat these 2 rows six times.
Cast off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows, then decrease once at each end of needle in next and every alternate row until 70 sts. Remain.
Work on row without shaping.
In next row, *k2tog, repeat from * to end of row. Work 3 rows in stocking stitch without shaping. Cast off. Work another sleeve the same.
The border:
Using 2.75 mm needles, cast on 8 stitches.
1st row - knit plain. Repeat this row until border measures required length around bolero edges (stretched slightly). Cast off.
You can smock the ribbing:
Right front:
1st row - draw together 1 st and 2 nd ribbed stitches., then 3rd & 4th, continue in this manner across front.
Miss three rows.
4th row - draw together 2 nd and 3 rd ribbed stitches, then 4th & 5th, continue across front. Continue until right front yoke has been completed. Smock left front yoke & back yoke in same manner.
To make up bolero:
Press lightly. Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves, placing seam to seam, gathering fullness at top. Sew garter stitch border in position around the bolero.
