OPAL 8ply MALE/FEMALE VEST
Size: Chest 106, 109, 113 cm. Length 66, 67, 69cm or desired length. Back: Using 4mm needles cast on 114 (118, 122) sts. Work in st stitch for 12 rows. Change to 4.5 mm needles and continue in st stitch until work measures 57 (58, 60) cm or length required. Cast off 40 sts, knit to end. Cast off 40 sts, place remaining 40 stitches on stitch holder. Fronts: Cast on 60 sts with 4mm needles. St stitch for 12 rows. Change to 4.5 mm needles and continue in st stitch until work measures 34 (35, 36)cm. Dec at neck edge every alt row 20 times and work until length is the same as the back. Cast off. Finishing: Stitch bottom hems. Sew shoulder seams tog. Using 4mm needles and right side facing, pick up equal nos of stitches around armholes and work in st stitch for 12 rows. Cast off. With 4mm needles and right side facing, pick up stitches along vest front (making sure the numbers are even from bottom to v neck and v neck to stitches on stitch holder). Next row purl. Divide the number of stitches between bottom of front and v neck by the number of buttons required. (Allow for 4 stitches top & bottom) Decrease 2 stitches for each buttonhole as required. Knit to the end. Next row work until button holes and increase two stitches at each. Work 7 more rows, repeat the button hole rows. Work 2 more rows, cast off. Sew side seams and stitch down armhole bands. Stitch down bands around vest and sew on buttons. If you wish to make this into a cardigan, omit the sleeve bands.
